ONCOLOGICAL, SURGICAL AND GASTROENTERIC PATHOLOGIES
Module ONCOLOGIA MEDICA

Academic Year 2026/2027 - Teacher: GABRIELLA PELLEGRITI

Expected Learning Outcomes

LEARNING AIMS

Knowledge and Understanding:
The aim of the course is to provide students with the fundamental concepts of epidemiology and prevention of neoplastic diseases and to enable them to describe the main mechanisms of cancer pathogenesis and identify the most appropriate clinical pathway for the management of oncology patients.

Applying Knowledge and Understanding:
Students will also be expected to develop a sound understanding of the methods used to assess the nutritional status of oncology patients, in order to identify the onset of malnutrition or cancer-related cachexia.

Making Judgements:
Particular emphasis will be placed on defining the clinical pathways that distinguish patients who can continue enteral nutrition from those for whom parenteral nutrition should be considered. In addition, strategies for the management of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting associated with conventional anticancer treatments will be discussed. Students should be able to collect and interpret clinical and nutritional data from oncology patients in order to contribute to the assessment of nutritional status and the identification of major risk factors for malnutrition and related complications.

Communication Skills:
Students should be able to communicate clearly and effectively information regarding the nutritional aspects of oncological diseases to patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals, using language appropriate to the context.
