Expected Learning Outcomes

Provide the essential elements for mastering the discipline.
Knowledge and understanding of concepts related to measurement and empirical and scientific research. Through a broad-based approach, deepen the most commonly used tools in clinical practice and in the treatment of Eating and Nutrition Disorders.
Applying Knowledge and Understanding
Students will be able to:
  • apply psychometric principles to the selection and use of psychological assessment instruments;
  • interpret psychometric test results in light of the psychometric properties of the instruments employed;
  • critically evaluate the suitability of an assessment instrument according to the aims of the evaluation, the clinical or research context, and the patient's cognitive and emotional status.
Making Judgements
Students will develop the ability to:
  • critically evaluate the methodological and psychometric quality of assessment instruments;
  • recognize the limitations and potential sources of error in psychometric assessment;
  • make informed judgments regarding the appropriate use of psychological tests in clinical, research, and applied settings, in accordance with ethical and professional standards.
Communication Skills
Students will be able to:
  • use appropriate technical terminology to describe the psychometric properties of assessment instruments;
  • communicate the results of psychometric assessments clearly to both specialist and non-specialist audiences;
  • collaborate effectively with professionals from different disciplines involved in psychological assessment;
  • communicate effectively with patients and their caregivers, adapting interviewing techniques to the patient's cognitive and emotional condition.
Learning Skills
Students will be able to:
  • identify, retrieve, and critically appraise the scientific literature in psychometrics;
  • independently update their knowledge of developments in psychometric methods and assessment instruments;
  • adopt a critical, evidence-based approach to the selection and use of psychometric tests.

Face-to-face lectures supported by slide presentations.
Clinical case discussions.

Prerequisite requirements according to the regulations of the degree course.

Learning Assessment

Learning Assessment Procedures

Assessment will consist of a written examination with both multiple-choice and open-ended questions. 

Assessment will be based on the following criteria, in line with the Dublin Descriptors:

  • knowledge and understanding of the topics covered in the module;
  • ability to apply knowledge in clinical practice;
  • critical thinking skills;
  • clarity of presentation and appropriate use of technical terminology.
